The Clyde is arguably the most evocative of Scottish rivers. Its
mention conjures up a variety of images of power, productivity and
pleasure from its 'bonnie banks' through the orchards of south
Lanarkshire to its association with shipbuilding and trade and the
holiday memories of thousands who fondly remember going 'doon the
watter'. Its story reflects much of the history of the lands it
flows through and the people who live on its banks. This book looks
at the maps which display the river itself from its source to the
wide estuary which is as much a part of the whole image. It
discusses how the river was mapped from its earliest depictions and
includes such topics as navigation, river crossings, war and
defence, tourism, sport and recreation, industry and power and
urban development.
American Presidents and the United Nations: Internationalism in the
Balance offers a fresh look at the U.S.-UN relationship. The
current discourse regarding America's linkage with the UN-and
particularly about the President's influence on the world body-has
metamorphosed well beyond the conventional conversation of the
post-World War II generation. This book places the UN-U.S.
relationship within the evolving fabric of international affairs
and American political developments through the 2020 presidential
election, into the early Biden administration. The text integrates
analyses of individual presidential politics and presidential
foreign policy preferences from Franklin Roosevelt through Donald
Trump, with congressional responses, and seemingly
ever-accelerating, troublesome, and often unanticipated
international crises. Readers will find the latest scholarship,
primary sourcing, as well as synthesis, and a fresh analysis of the
ongoing and increasingly multifaceted political and intellectual
debate about America's role in the world. The book spotlights one
of the most creative, complex, and inspirited global institutions
ever devised by human beings-the United Nations-and puts it in
context with the powerful role of the American presidency.
Essential for students, scholars, and general readers alike.

Maps can tell much about a place that traditional histories fail to
communicate. This lavishly illustrated book features 70 maps which
have been selected for the particular stories they reveal about
different political, commercial and social aspects of Scotland's
largest city. The maps featured provide fascinating insights into
topics such as: the development of the Clyde and its shipbuilding
industry, the villages which were gradually subsumed into the city,
how the city was policed, what lies underneath the city streets,
the growth of Glasgow during the Industrial Revolution, the
development of transport, the city's green spaces, the health of
Glasgow, Glasgow as a tourist destination, the city as a wartime
target, and its regeneration in the 1980s as the host city of one
of the UK's five National Garden Festivals. Together, they present
a fascinating insight into how Glasgow has changed and developed
over the last 500 years, and will appeal to all those with an
interest in Glasgow and Scottish history, as well as those
interested in urban history, architectural history, town planning
and the history of maps.
Social work practice in the twenty-first century is continually
changing. Contemporary practitioners work in complex areas and have
to do so quickly and competently. This text helps qualified social
workers, as well as those about to qualify, to build on their
initial studies in order to develop professionally. The volume

in order to deal with complexity in social work. Making use of The
Open University's expertise in providing cutting edge but
accessible course materials and its distinct approach to social
work practice, this textbook includes underpinning knowledge,
practical applications and critical reflexivity. It includes
questions for further reflection and application , plentiful
examples and suggestions for further reading. Aimed at the newly

The year 1998 was the 800th anniversary of the election of Lotario
dei Conti di Segni as Pope. At 37, he was one of the youngest men
ever to hold that office, and he was to become one of the most
important popes in the entire history of Christianity. Together
with Gregory VII, he was one of the two most important popes of the
Middle Ages. In his efforts to promote Christianity and defend it
from its enemies, Innocent played a role in the history of almost
every part of Europe and its environs. He initiated both the
ill-fated Fourth Crusade, that ended up sacking the Greek Christian
city of Constantinople, and the Albigensian Crusade, that
devastated major parts of Southern France and led to its submission
to the French crown. He promoted the crusades that accomplished the
conquest and conversion of the pagans of the south Baltic coast.
These papers are taken from the interdisciplinary conference, Pope
Innocent III and his World, held in May 1997 at the Hofstra
University Cultural Center, New York.

Tille Hoyuk was excavated between 1979 and 1990 by the British
Institute of Archaeology at Ankara as part of the Turkish Lower
Euphrates Rescue Project. The site revealed important remains of
the Late Bronze and Iron Ages, and of the Achaemenid, and
Hellenistic periods, as well as a Medieval phase . Between the 12th
and 15th centuries the prehistoric mound was occupied by the
fortified residence of a local chieften, and this volume contains a
discussion of the methodology and stratigraphy of the excavation,
followed by catalogues of the pottery, metal objects and coins.

Aleister Crowley's appeal on the level of popular culture has been
well catered for by a number of biographies that have appeared in
recent years, but the more intellectual side to him, which is
equally fascinating, has not received so much serious treatment.
Crowley, a Modern Master is neither an account of his life, nor a
straightforward presentation of his teaching, but an attempt to
place him clearly in the context of modern ideas as well as a
number of older traditions.
